What is Failure to Launch?

Failure to Launch (FTL) refers to an individual:

  • 18 years or older

  • not actively involved in employment, in education, or training (“NEET”)

  • living with a parent* or at their expense

*Parent refers to any caregiver - parents, grandparents, family members, or partners.

FTL adults struggle with intense emotional pain stemming from feelings of incompetence and unlovability. Their pain acts like an emotional dictator that commands them to withdraw from friends, family, work, school, hobbies, passions, interests, and other activities that make life worth living.

Stuck in a virtual world, numbing out, and increasingly distant from what is important, they feel directionless and unsure of their best life because they’re so focused on protecting themselves from emotional pain.

FTL adults do not suffer alone.

Their parents are often struggling with emotional exhaustion, drained from providing emotional and practical support. They feel guilty, believing they are responsible for their loved one’s dependency.

The relationships between FTL adults and their parents are very strained and volatile. Parents resent their loved one’s dependency. The FTL adult resents their perceived lack of control and autonomy.

Parents are isolated, stressed, and overwhelmed by the financial burden and fear of the future. They fear their loved one will not be able to cope without them and will have to support them physically, emotionally, and financially for the rest of their life.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Imagine your loved one wakes up in their cozy apartment - a space they have decorated to reflect their unique personality and tastes. Imagine your loved one starting their day with confidence and purpose. They interact with colleagues, contribute ideas, and take on responsibilities.

In the evening, they come home and call you to share a bit about their day. You feel warm and relaxed, free from anxiety about your child’s future. You feel a profound sense of peace an pride as you see your loved one thriving.

My name is Dr. Ryne Pulido.

I am passionate about helping young people live rich and meaningful lives.

I am trained in Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE). SPACE is a 12-session parent-focused, evidence-based treatment for youth struggling with anxiety, avoidance, and dependence.

Although only parents and caregivers attend SPACE sessions, it is a treatment for high avoidance and dependence.

SPACE is not about blaming parents. It is about practicality. FTL adults very often refuse therapy.

Parents are suffering as well, and their suffering is no less deserving of help. SPACE focuses on the only thing parents can genuinely control—their behavior.
